Faces of Japan

A poem by Ono no Komachi - 9th Century

Yumeji ni wa
Ashi mo yasumezu
Kayoedomo
Utsutsu ni hitome
Mishigoto wa arazu

Though I go to you
ceaselessly along dream paths,
the sum of those trysts
is less than a single glimpse
granted in the waking world.

Gion, Kyoto

A Geisha

"Remember Chiyo, geisha are not courtesans and we're not wives. We sell our skills, not our bodies. We create another secret world, a place only of beauty. The very word "geisha" means artist and to be a geisha is to be judged as a moving work of art"
Memorable movie quote: Memoirs of a Geisha 2005

Geisha are an increasingly rare sight. After a long wait on the street of Gion my patience was rewarded. This eastern beauty reminded me of a scene when the protagonist is taught to walk through a busy street and capture the attention of passersby. I have never seen anyone walking so gracefully.
